Religious Beliefs and Tradition
People of Tamilnadu have unique religious beliefs and it has become a part of their culture. Their living is mostly based on nature and being handed down from generations. Every occasion or stage in a girl or boy’s life is being celebrated and rituals are involved. Naming ceremony, Ear piercing(Kadhu kutthal), head tonsure at their Native place or kuladeivam temple, Vidyarambam (admitting in school), brahmopadesam ( Poonal ceremony) to boys , Puberty function for girls, are also celebrated with religious belief.
Kavadi attam: People carry Kavadi to Murugan temples during Thaipusam, Aadi Krithigai and Vaikasi Visakam as a ceremonial sacrifice ( Nerthikadan in Tamil) and offer to Lord Murugan. The whole distance to the temple is covered by walking and bare footed. We can see large groups of people will be visiting to Murugan temples, especially in Arupadai veedu temples,
Kolam: Every tamil house Kolam is drawn in front of the house before dawn. There are varieties of kolam, like sikku kolam, pulli kolam, Ner kodu extra. During Margazhi month elaborate kolams are drawn in front of the house. In Mylapore, Chennai around the streets, we can still witness this in the month of Margazhi.
Navaratri , called Golu, is celebrated in houses during Mid September and October as a tradition. Earthen dolls painted in vibrant colours are arranged in steps of odd numbers. The whole house will be decorated with lamps and Thoranam.The Top most will be occupied by gods and the lowermost with animals and birds. There will be thematic golu also arranged in some houses. During these 9 days it is believed that Goddess Lakshmi, Durga and Saraswati were invited and residing in the house. 9th day is celebrated as Saraswathi puja or Ayudha pooja and the 10th day will be Vijayadashami. On this day the dolls are removed and stored in a safe place. Every day there will be special pooja in the evening and Sundal will be distributed to people along with Thambulam to visitors. In some temples also Golu is arranged and human sized dolls are kept.
Koil Thiruvizha: Thiuvizha or festival being celebrated in all temples annually. Day one starts with Kodiyetram and will continue for 10 or eleven days . People doesn't go out of their village limits once the kodiyetram or Kppaukattudhal is done in the local temple. Every house takes part in arranging the thiruvizha and contributes with devotion.
