Folk Dance or Gramiya Nadanam
Aside from the classical and devotional arts, Tamil Nadu is the land of numerous folk art forms like Karakkatam, Kolattam, Kavadi attam, Kummi, Mayilatam, Poikal kuthirai attam , Villu pattu and Therukoothu. In Karakattam, the artist dances while balancing tall pots on their heads. In Mayilattam, the dancer mimics the movements of a peacock while in Poikkal kuthirai, the dancer mimics the gallop of the horses. Temple festivals also see other dances such as Oyilattam, Kavadi and Therukkoothu. In villu pattu, the artist sings and narrates the stories and uses Villu (Bow) as an instrument or percussion item. In Therukoothu the artists perform both music and dance and they are mostly performed on streets to educate or to bring awareness to the rural people. In Bommalattam (Puppet show), dolls are used and with the string in hand the artist controls the movements of the dolls or characters. We can arrange for a performance if you would like to witness one..
