Colonial

Colonial buildings in Tamilnadu which depict the British, Indo Gothic and Indo saracenic and Portuguese architecture which were built in the colonial era. Though some of them lost their originality,  they remain as a memorial  even today.


The Senate house in Chennai- Senate house is one of the oldest monuments in Chennai. It is an example of Indo-Saracenic architecture. Though it loses its original charm, it is still considered as a marvel of the architecture of the Colonial era.


Fort St. George, Chennai,  is the first fortress built by the British East India company and is located on the banks of Bay of Bengal. There is a church , museum inside this campus. Now , The Tamilnadu Legislative Assembly is housed in the campus. Erstwhile residences of Robert Clive and Generals were now occupied by the Archeological survey of India, Military canteen and various administrative offices of the Tamil Nadu Government.


Government Museum Chennai, earlier known as the central museum was constructed by the East India Company. It houses the Biggest public Library, museum consisting of various departments like Archaeology, Anthropology, Arts, Geology and zoology.


Icehouse in Chennai, now called Vivekanandar illam, was built in 1838 to store Ice by an American.  Later the bulldog got its name as Vivekanandar Illam as Swami Vivekananada stayed in this historic building for a few days.


Santhome Church, Chennai was initially built by portuguese and later the Cathedral was built by The Britishers.


Mother Mary shrine on the top of Saint Thomas mount in Chennai was built by Portuguese.


Pondicherry, once under French control , has few buildings and houses, Churches are still kept intact . White town or French quarter is the ideal place to witness the French colonial buildings. French war memorial,  Romain Rolland Library and Raj niwas are also some of the French colonial buildings. And the last, Statue of Dupleix at Rock beach, which was built in 1870 in  honour of Dupleix, a French Governor who ruled Pondicherry . 


Dutch fort in Nagapattinam and Tranquebar Governor's bungalow were built by Dutch.
